23rd March, 2014

World Meteorological Day is to commemorate the creation in 1950 of the World Meteorological Organisation –  specialised agency of the United Nations.  It is the UN’s authoritative voice on state and behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources.

The day also highlights the huge contribution that WMO has played in the safety and well-being of our society.

This year’s theme is “Weather and climate: engaging youth.” The youth of today will benefit from the advances being made in our ability to understand and forecast the Earth’s weather and climate. At the same time, most of them will live into the second half of this century and experience the increasing impacts of global warming. WMO also encourages young people today to learn more about our climate and weather system and to take action on climate change.
